up:: [[Note-Making Architecture]] # Making Notes from Outside Sources ## Highlights and Fleeting Notes These can be done the same way [[Making Notes from Original Work and Projects#Fleeting Notes Transient Notes Inbox|as fleeting notes from original work are]], or on a page of notes for a source within the Sources folder. They can be the raw material for creating Literature Notes as highlights, as well as original ideas, questions, etc. to "serve as reminders of what is in your head." ^[https://fortelabs.co/blog/how-to-take-smart-notes/] Process highlights as you would fleeting notes - preferably right after taking them - and turn them into literature notes. ## Literature Notes Four guidelines in creating literature notes: 1. Be extremely selective in what you decide to keep 2. Keep the overall note as short as possible 3. Use your own words, instead of copying quotes verbatim 4. Write down the bibliographic details on the source 1. This can just be a link back to the Source page # Permanent Notes/Evergreen Notes These get developed from Fleeting Notes and [[Literature Notes]]. [Evergreen Note titles are like APIs](https://notes.andymatuschak.org/z3XP5GRmd9z1D2qCE7pxUvbeSVeQuMiqz9x1C) - the note should be longer and fleshed out, the title should be a clear window into it. An evergreen should be [[Atomicity|atomic]], but at the conceptual level. A concept can often be broken down into constituent parts, but an evergreen should [encompass all about a concept without being overbroad while simultaneously not being overly fragmented](https://notes.andymatuschak.org/z3XP5GRmd9z1D2qCE7pxUvbeSVeQuMiqz9x1C?stackedNotes=z4Rrmh17vMBbauEGnFPTZSK3UmdsGExLRfZz1). Bringing in the [[Linking Your Thinking]] flow, bring fleeting notes and literature notes into a [[MOC]] workbench and use those to create evergreen notes. These new notes will use the state tags to track their development. When a fleeting note is used, delete it. When a literature note is used, it should go into a bibliographic slip-box, linked back to the source in the Sources folder. --- Check the book named [[Making Notes from Original Work and Projects]]?
